Click the arrow to the right of the Open button, and then click Open Exclusive.
On the Tools menu, point to Security, and then click Set Database Password.

THis creates a problem. OPENING EXCLUSIVELY is now allowing multiple users. Is there another way around this? I need it password protected but at the same time I need multiple users in this database.

TIA

Yes. Don't use a database password.
Scroll down the list right under 'Set Database Password' and look at the next three options (User & Group Permissions/Accounts/Wizard)

Basically, you can create login/password information only used inside Access that allows you to set access levels as far down as to individual objects (user can ONLY run a single query) or as broad as you need it to be.

I do feel it is a little cumbersome to fiddle with/learn - but not really any more difficult than setting individual file permissions in a DOS environment.

Unless I'm mistaken though, opening a Database in Exclusive mode doesn't lock out other users from opening and viewing the database. It just locks out any changes they might try to make.
