Data Refresh and slicers in Sharepoint

I am wondering if someone can explain the difference between refreshing data in sharepoint and utilizing the slicers. I am a little confused about how and where the data is actually stored, is it in the powerpivot model or in the database? If I design a powerpivot model in excel using a query that points to a SQL server database, is this data actually stored in the excel workbook? If i publish a workbook to sharepoint, is it an actual workbook containing data or more of a data model? Where is the data being stored and is the automatic refresh necessary if I am using a slicer? The thought being that if powerpivot is only acting as a data model, clicking the slicer would trigger a refresh by re-querying the sql server database especially if the model has been released from the cache in SSAS where the analysis is happening. I have been working with powerpiot and doing research, however, there seems to be conflicting information about what powerpivot actually does and how it works. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Josh
