Hey, welcome back to the MrExcel netcast.
I'm Bill Jelen.
Today in the United States is opening day of baseball.
So, we have a baseball related item for you.
I was traveling up I-77 through, Ohio today stop by resting place of DENTON-T."CY" YOUNG, greatest pitcher in the history of the world 500 games won.
Very very low ERA.
So, let's take a quick look at how we calculate ERA, earned run average in Excel.
Popular statistics that we have for baseball. We have innings pitched which usually are in fractions of thirds.
So, while those are often presented in decimals. If we use Format Cells, and then go to the Fraction tab, we can specify that the numbers should be shown in thirds.
Now, they offer up to one digit but instead let's go to the Custom tab and say that we want to show it based on thirds, click OK.
The calculation for ERA is the number of earn runs time 9 divided by innings pitched.
So here's our calculation here.
Now, usually in baseball terms. This is expressed with two decimal places.
So, we'll go to Format Cells on the Number tab, choose explicitly two decimal places and there you get it.
So, let's take a look at, at the career numbers for CY YOUNG, 7354 and two thirds innings pitched, 2147 earned runs, and ERA of 2.63.
Greatest picture ever glad to see that baseball's back.
Thanks for stopping by.
We'll see you next time for another netcast from MrExcel.
from 1890 to 1911 CY YOUNG, pitched 874 major league baseball games he won 511 games, 3 no hit and one perfect game in which no man reach first base.
