11 | Sat, 6 Jan 2018 | 0:33 | 15.2 | 9.4 | 17.2 | | | | K | First session on JTX Cyclo 6 since built
early Dec 2017. 4x4 min sessions with 2
min break (to adjust bike, volume, get
towel etc), plus 1x17 minutes. First one
drained my quads within a couple of
minutes, just like when I ran out of
steam halfway up Hallas Lane and was
forced to stop. Following sessions got
slightly easier, then Moby **** came on
random playlist and it was
inspirational. Felt good after! | |
---|
12 | Wed, 10 Jan 2018 | 0:43 | 21.2 | 13.2 | 18.4 | | | | K | First non-stop session, set out to cycle
for full length of Unleashed In The East
with bursts on endings - did it!
Saddle-sore, perineum/prostate area
numb. | |
---|
13 | Tue, 16 Jan 2018 | 0:48 | 21.2 | 13.2 | 16.5 | | | | K | Full length of Zep Spokane 30.12.1968
(boring), no bursts. Very saddle-sore,
perineum/prostate area completely numb,
very, very uncomfortable. Went for wee
afterwards, felt I hadn't quite finished
so pushed a bit and started seeping
thick white semen-like fluid!!! | |
---|
14 | Fri, 19 Jan 2018 | 0:52 | 22.2 | 13.8 | 15.9 | | | | K | Full length of Zep Whiskey A Go Go
05.01.1969 (great), occasional short
burst. First session on replacement
saddle, shorts not padded. MUCH improved
comfort. Surprised pace slightly slower
than last time. | |
---|
15 | Tue, 23 Jan 2018 | 0:53 | 26.3 | 16.3 | 18.5 | | >100 | | K | Full length of Zep Whiskey A Go Go
05.01.1969 again, occasional short
burst. AM session. Aimed to keep heart
rate over 100 and generally succeeded
(also realised hands don't need to be in
contact with sensors*) - later updates:
1) *WRONG! 2) Accuracy of JTX hand
sensors is understated by 20% compared
to Garmin 305 used from 31.01. | |
---|
16 | Thu, 25 Jan 2018 | 0:46 | 21.3 | 13.2 | 17.3 | | | | K | Fillmore West 10.01.1969 early show.
Didn't use heart sensor as not
comfortable enough to put hands on
sensors. | |
---|
17 | Sat, 27 Jan 2018 | 0:45 | 20.0 | 12.4 | 16.6 | | | | K | Fillmore West 10.01.1969 late show.
Didn't use heart sensor (just ordered
handlebar mount for Garmin 305). Sat
further back in saddle, much more
comfortable. Sessions seemed much easier
- but then the pace was slower! Defo
need motivation from Heart Rate Monitor
for faster pace. | |
---|
18 | Sun, 28 Jan 2018 | 0:46 | 20.7 | 12.9 | 16.8 | | | | K | Fillmore West 10.01.1969 early show.
Hard work after yesterday. Really
knackered afterwards. | |
---|
19 | Wed, 31 Jan 2018 | 0:50 | 23.6 | 14.7 | 17.6 | | 122 | | K | Fillmore West 10.01.1969 late show.
Excellent session, really motivated by
a) Garmin 305 HRM display b) finally
figuring out how to stop console
scrolling to hold on time elapsed (SHORT
press of Mode button) and c) changing
arm/shoulder posture to racing position.
No discomfort. Raced through time
elapsed 'stages' as concentrating on
Garmin HR readout exceeding 120bpm
(thrilled to see this, knowing it's
correct, vs inaccurate bike sensor
readings of only 100 or so). Stayed
between 120-125bpm the whole session.
Could have carried on well beyond 50
mins but didn't want to be late down for
dinner! Biking is really building my
general confidence, which seems to be
growing almost daily. | |

20 | Wed, 14 Feb 2018 | 0:45 | 21.0 | 13.0 | 17.4 | | | | K | Fillmore West 10.01.1969 late show.
Apprehensive about session following
aborted run in Lanzarote last Thursday
(either dehydration or blood loss from
piles) and being up all night. Needn't
have worried, I was fine, legs very
strong. First session with fan, on
lowest setting started out brilliant,
but probably needed to be middle setting
halfway onwards. First session with
water bottle but couldn't get any water
through straw! | |
---|
21 | Thu, 22 Feb 2018 | 0:45 | 20.9 | 13.0 | 17.3 | | <120 | | K | Fillmore West 11.01.1969. Learning
points: 1) chest strap MUST be tight -
took ages to get a correct readout from
Garmin and 2) not enough to have (brand
new) window wide open regardless of 3c
temperature outside, as there's still no
air circulation - fan is essential.
Turned resistance dial round to 6
o'clock, less effort than before but
fewer revolutions. Took at least 15 mins
to get heart rate over 120bpm and seemed
to struggle to keep it that way. | |
---|
22 | Sun, 4 Mar 2018 | 0:45 | 21.0 | 13.0 | 17.4 | | <110 | | K | Fillmore West 11.01.1969. Curious
session - worked as hard as I could from
start to finish yet took 30 minutes for
heart rate to reach just 110bpm and
didn't exceed it for the entire session.
Window wide open, 0C, fan on 2nd
setting, only one drop of sweat on mat!
Took drink a couple of times. | |
---|
23 | Tue, 6 Mar 2018 | 0:48 | 22.0 | 13.7 | 17.1 | | 111 | | K | Fillmore West 12.01.1969. Forgot to put
headband on, definitely needed it. Tried
water bottle without lid on, got water
all over me! Going to use squeeze bottle
next time. Turned resistence up around
25 mins to try and increase my heart
rate and it made only 1bpm difference
(111bpm). Legs like concrete afterwards.
Know I'm dehydrated, only drinking about
1.5 pints of water a day, plus small
amount of whisky last couple of nights
to finish an old bottle. | |
---|
24 | Sat, 10 Mar 2018 | 0:47 | 20.8 | 12.9 | 16.5 | | | | K | Fillmore West 12.01.1969. No time to put
water bottle on (going down to Nottm
straight after), didn't suffer for it.
Repositioning of fan helped greatly,
hardly any sweat. So-so session, pissed
off cos HRM readings well below what
they should have been and eventually
went haywire. Read up online about this
being solely the strap (not the chest
unit or the monitor). | |
---|
25 | Sat, 17 Mar 2018 | 1:01 | 25.8 | 16.0 | 15.8 | | 110 | | K | Fillmore West 12.01.1969. No water
bottle again - definitely need some
water to stop mouth going dry. Snowing
outside but as ever, needed fan to keep
me cool cos still sweating. First time
I've done more than an hour, though
surprised pace wasn't greater cos
consciously pedalling really hard. That
said, I was ill for 2 days on Wed/Thu. | |
---|
26 | Thu, 12 Apr 2018 | 0:45 | 19.3 | 12.0 | 16.0 | | 110 | | K | Last session on JTX Cyclo 6. Boston
23.01.1969. Took bottle of water, drank
it all and needed it, probably cos of
all the sweets I've been eating in last
few days. Felt better than I thought I
would after 3 weeks without a session
and a 3 hour, 10.4 mile walk yesterday. | |

33 | Sun, 14 Oct 2018 | 0:40 | 15.2 | 9.4 | 14.2 | 5 (42%) | 107 | 95 | K | Neil Young, Weld. Much better motivated
with this music than meandering early
Zep. | |

34 | Thu, 18 Oct 2018 | 0:35 | 12.8 | 7.9 | 13.6 | 5 (42%) | 120 | 91 | K | Boston 26.01.1969. Very similar to last
time - legs getting used to it, less
time-watching. | |
---|
35 | Sun, 21 Oct 2018 | 1:00 | 23.2 | 14.4 | 14.4 | 5 (42%) | 118 | 97 | J | Boston 26.01.1969. Set out to do this
and did it - could have gone for longer
too. Intentionally hardly looked at
progress for first 20 mins, which seemed
to make session shorter. | |
---|
36 | Wed, 24 Oct 2018 | 0:35 | 12.2 | 7.6 | 13.0 | 5 (42%) | 95 | 87 | L | Boston 26.01.1969. Set out to do 60 mins
but at around 30 mins I was starting to
feel very drowsy and started closing my
eyes, then my concentration started to
go and decided to stop. Got up at 9am,
far too early - getting up at anything
up to 3pm!!! Seriously wanting to fall
asleep in the afternoon and went to bed
around 5, then came down at 8, then fell
asleep in chair till 10. | |
---|
37 | Sat, 27 Oct 2018 | 0:45 | 18.0 | 11.2 | 14.9 | 5 (42%) | 104 | 99 | J | Boston 26.01.1969. 3:45pm, 2 hours after
getting up. Exactly what I set out to
do. Powered my way through the upbeat
bits then slowed, really great session
(12 hours sleep). | |
---|
38 | Tue, 30 Oct 2018 | 1:00 | 24.5 | 15.2 | 15.2 | 5 (42%) | 111 | 102 | J | Boston 26.01.1969. 6:00pm. Great
session, again, exactly what I set out
to do and powered my way through all
upbeat bits then slowed. Was cold before
starting and freezing cold outside so
only had window partially open, but
absolutely drenched in sweat from the
effort. MUST OPEN THE WINDOW FULLY NEXT
TIME! | |
---|
39 | Fri, 2 Nov 2018 | 1:00 | 24.1 | 15.0 | 15.0 | 5 (42%) | 106 | 100 | J | Boston 26.01.1969 (I love this show!).
5:30pm. Great session, again, exactly
what I set out to do and powered my way
through all upbeat bits then slowed.
Window fully open, still absolutely
drenched in sweat from the effort. MUST
USE FAN NEXT TIME! | |
---|
40 | Mon, 5 Nov 2018 | 1:00 | 24.8 | 15.4 | 15.4 | 5 (42%) | 105 | 103 | J | Boston 26.01.1969. 6:00pm. Another
pretty good session, exactly what I set
out to do and powered my way through all
upbeat bits then slowed. Heart felt
slightly strained at times (not when I
was pushing the pace though) and got
really annoyed with bum chafing for no
apparent reason. Fan/open window
virtually eliminated sweat. | |
---|
41 | Wed, 7 Nov 2018 | 0:45 | 19.1 | 11.9 | 15.8 | 5 (42%) | 105 | 106 | J | Boston 26.01.1969. 4:00pm. Very good
session, reduced from 60 mins as instead
of outdoor cycling (too wet), plus want
to see if it improves tomorrow's run at
all. Wore cycling shorts only (no pants)
- no noticeable chafing! Fan on, window
half open (raining outside), perfect! | |
---|
42 | Fri, 9 Nov 2018 | 1:00 | 25.2 | 15.6 | 15.6 | 5 (42%) | 115 | 102 | J | Boston 26.01.1969. 11:15am. Excellent
session, despite forgetting to take my
pants off and switch fan on. Got bit
uncomfortable but nothing too bad. I've
never seen so much sweat on the floor
though, 2 massive pools of sweat, even
though window was wide open. Consciously
breathing 1 in 4 for the fast parts,
which I'm making longer each time. Can't
believe my average HR - really in the
zone now! Performance-wise, this has to
the best session to date! | |
---|
43 | Sun, 11 Nov 2018 | 1:00 | 26.9 | 16.7 | 16.7 | 5 (42%) | 111 | 112 | J | Boston 26.01.1969. 5:00pm. Thought I'd
try breathing 1 in 4 throughout (like I
did with yesterday's run) as well as the
sprints during all the fast bits. And it
worked - really good session.
Interesting to note average HR lower
than 2 days ago and distance and power
were significantly greater - the fact my
power and distance has improved with an
actual reduction in my HR means my
fitness is improving. | |
---|
44 | Wed, 14 Nov 2018 | 1:00 | 26.4 | 16.4 | 16.4 | 5 (42%) | 110 | 111 | J | Boston 26.01.1969. 4:20pm, 35 mins after
getting up! Breathed 1 in 4 from start -
probably began too quickly but Train
Kept A-Rollin' was a fast starter! | |
---|
45 | Mon, 19 Nov 2018 | 0:45 | 18.7 | 11.6 | 15.5 | 5 (42%) | 103 | 104 | J | Boston 26.01.1969. 5:10am, immediately
after getting up! Had to get this
session in before going to hospital for
anal fissure op in case I was kept in
overnight. Wore headphones, very
comfortable, but unplugged them by
mistake 5 mins in and had to stop
previous 1hr timer to stop the sound
coming out of the speakers - didn't want
to be late for appt so reset time to 45
mins. Fan set to lowest setting to avoid
too much noise but definitely needs to
be middle setting - very thirsty,
couldn't get enough water down. | |
---|
46 | Wed, 21 Nov 2018 | 1:00 | 26.2 | 16.3 | 16.3 | 5 (42%) | 108 | 109 | J | Boston 26.01.1969. 6:30pm. About 5C
outside. Fan on second setting, window
wide open but headband in the wash - I
still needed it. Bursts on all fast
parts, as usual now. Wondering if I
should be increasing effort level as
doing around 80rpm, feels slightly too
easy. Wore old Polar Heart Monitor/chest
strap and they match bike reading
PERFECTLY. However, I stopped the watch
and forget to check the bike distance
and missed it!!! | |
---|
47 | Fri, 23 Nov 2018 | 1:00 | 22.8 | 14.2 | 14.2 | 6 (50%) | 105 | 117 | J | Boston 26.01.1969. Effort Level
increased to 6/12, hence higher power
output and lower distance. 10:45am,
about 4C outside, wore headphones (after
Helen burst in, screaming at me to turn
it down). Definitely more of an effort
now but surprised HR hasn't increased as
well. Still, good to feel quads burning
on the bike as they haven't been for
quite a while. | |
---|
48 | Sun, 25 Nov 2018 | 1:00 | 23.1 | 14.3 | 14.3 | 6 (50%) | 108 | 118 | J | Boston 26.01.1969. 5pm, 5C outside.
Tightened foot straps and raised seat 1
notch to 11, which definitely improved
my performance. I felt I was able to
push down and almost sprint for the fast
bits. Breathing lightly 1 in 4 for at
least half the session. Excellent
session. | |
---|
49 | Wed, 28 Nov 2018 | 1:02 | 23.9 | 14.8 | 14.4 | 6 (50%) | 105 | 118 | J | Boston 26.01.1969. 5pm, extremely windy
outside and daren't put fan on so got
pretty sweaty. Purposely timed run at
1:02 to beat longstanding but irrelevent
1:01 previous record from months ago.
Heart at the stage where it can't do
much more because quads so heavy. | |
---|
50 | Sat, 1 Dec 2018 | 1:00 | 23.6 | 14.7 | 14.7 | 6 (50%) | 107 | 121 | J | Boston 26.01.1969. 1pm. Another
excellent session. | |
---|
51 | Tue, 4 Dec 2018 | 1:00 | 23.8 | 14.8 | 14.8 | 6 (50%) | 109 | 122 | J | Boston 26.01.1969. 5pm. Legs felt bit
heavy for first 5-10 mins, probably cos
I'd been hanging around in cycling
shorts all day, waiting for bathroom
fitter to go. | |
---|
52 | Thu, 6 Dec 2018 | 1:00 | 22.7 | 14.1 | 14.1 | 6 (50%) | 110 | 117 | J | Boston 26.01.1969. 9am. Legs very heavy
for first 15 mins (big spag bols last
night/too little to drink?). Forgot to
fill bottle but didn't feel any the
worse for it. | |
---|
53 | Sat, 8 Dec 2018 | 1:00 | 23.4 | 14.5 | 14.5 | 6 (50%) | 107 | 121 | J | Boston 26.01.1969. 9:30am. Wore
headphones, didn't even notice. Reset
seat yesterday when moving mat and
accidentally made it higher than before,
which made pushing down on pedals much
easier! First 5 mins was more of a
warm-up, after that it was almost a
breeze - hardly breathing, v alert,
almost enjoyed it! Ate banana beforehand
and pint of lemon squash. Window half
open cos of v strong wind/rain. Barely
sweating. Missed distance reading while
chucking headphones on the bed!!! | |
---|
54 | Mon, 10 Dec 2018 | 1:00 | 25.6 | 15.9 | 15.9 | 6 (50%) | 131 | 131 | J | Boston 26.01.1969. 5:30pm. Amazing
session, absolutely thrashed pedals
almost from start to finish, as if the
resistance was almost non-existent!
Breathing 1 in 4 naturally but still
couldn't BELIEVE the BPM (out earlier
and had a caffeinated filter coffee).
Angina hit me after about 10 mins, then
faded away, purely because I've just
unintentionally gone 3 days without
taking any pills (too tired to sort
boxes out). Angina returned really badly
pretty soon afterwards, pain so intense
I was forced into sorting my pills out
straight after dinner. | |

55 | Wed, 12 Dec 2018 | 1:00 | 24.2 | 15.0 | 15.0 | 6 (50%) | 110 | 124 | J | Boston 26.01.1969. 5:30pm. Good session,
but much more like usual sessions this
time, which can only be cos of
yesterday's 7 mile, 90 min run (no
additional rest at moment as being woken
at 8:00am by bathroom fitter since 4
Dec). First session handwriting stats on
phone attached to handlebar - worked
very well. | |
---|
56 | Fri, 14 Dec 2018 | 1:00 | 23.3 | 14.5 | 14.5 | 6 (50%) | 104 | 120 | J | Boston 26.01.1969. 5:30pm. Increased my
weight input from 76kg to 80kg. First 10
mins felt like a rusty warm-up and
noticeably tired after 40 mins but still
able to put in the sprints. | |
---|
57 | Mon, 17 Dec 2018 | 1:00 | 25.3 | 15.7 | 15.7 | 6 (50%) | 108 | 130 | J | Boston 26.01.1969. 5:45pm. FORGOT TO
TURN FAN ON, DRENCHED IN SWEAT WITH
POOLS ON MAT DESPITE WINDOW WIDE OPEN
AND FREEZING OUTSIDE. First 5 mins or so
was warming up after yesterday's 5 miler
over Forth Road Bridge. Sensed my legs
were powerful and they sure were, very
much like 10.12, really able to push
down and power - felt like there weren't
enough fast bits for my legs to power
through! And look at the BPM vs Watts
compared to 10.12! | |
---|
58 | Wed, 19 Dec 2018 | 1:00 | 24.4 | 15.2 | 15.2 | 6 (50%) | 108 | 125 | J | Boston 26.01.1969. 6:05pm. Wore Muddyfox
shorts (no padding), didn't suffer for
it. Needed 5 mins to warm up properly
then L quads became really strong.
Breathing quite heavily this time though
- probably lack of sleep (bed at 3am, up
at 8am for bathroom fitter, pretty
typical at the moment). | |
---|
59 | Fri, 21 Dec 2018 | 1:00 | 21.5 | 13.4 | 13.4 | 6 (50%) | 90 | 110 | K | Boston 26.01.1969. 5:20pm. Hardly any
power in legs, sprints almost
impossible, basically a pedalling
session for an hour, although I
completed it comfortably. Went for a
walk to the Co-op a couple of hours ago
and my legs were already knackered then.
I dread to think about tomorrow's run. | |

60 | Sun, 23 Dec 2018 | 1:00 | 24.0 | 14.9 | 14.9 | 6 (50%) | 99 | 123 | J | Boston 26.01.1969. 6:20pm. FORGOT
HEADBAND (dripping loads of sweat, don't
do that again!) AND PHONE (not a problem
if you've still got pen and paper
nearby). Much better than last time,
although took a while to warm up
properly, then tired a bit after 45
mins, but after 50 mins or so I was
absolutely powering it. | |
---|

HEADBAND AGAIN - same irritation as last
time! About 4 hours' sleep and 2 JARs
last night and dehydrated (+ regular
night sweats) so was tired for first 10
mins, but legs really responsive on fast
passages. | |

hours' sleep last night (concentrating
on improving this workbook). First 3
mins or so was warm-up, then legs really
were warmed up. Thrashed pedals on every
fast passage, even got up to 182 watts
at one point! Surprised mileage and
wattage weren't even higher but I still
got in the top 10%. | |

not feeling as strong as Friday though,
took 5 mins+ to warm up and couldn't get
burst power beyond 150 watts. | |

the outset, possibly the 2 consecutive
runs, late night and 2 JARs, but no
power in legs at all, was more into the
music than the session. However, at 45
mins I started experimenting with my
pedalling and started pulling up in
addition to pushing down and I could
actually feel my quads working, as well
as the motion propelling me forwards and
backwards, rather than side to side. | |

apprehensive at start after last session
but I was fine once I got into it during
first fast break (T3 - Killing Floor).
Legs became more and more responsive
throughout, really enjoying it over last
15 mins or so. Re last session, legs
pedalling too quickly to think about
pulling up. | |

hour after getting up, following a
massive 15 hour sleep - up in the night
just once and well dehydrated when I got
up. Had a pint of water/lime juice and a
banana about 30 mins beforehand.
Excellent session, and very pleasantly
surprised - power and strength in my
legs was unbelievable, powering on every
fast bit and even on some of the slower
bits - it just HAS to be the length of
bed rest. Top 10% performance and on a
'runner's high' all evening. Side issue
of very bad chafing to back of thighs
from wearing X-large women's shorts
(bought by accident) a little lower down
from my crotch to try and avoid chafing. | |

decreased to 78kg. Back of thighs still
v sore before I started, wore different
cycling shorts tonight, no problems
whatsoever. This was a session in 3
parts - First 30 mins were OK, good
level of strength in legs for sprints.
Over next 20 mins my strength drained
away fast with much of this period spent
with my eyes closed, even feeling a bit
dizzy at times. 50 mins in, my energy
was renewed and OK for all the sprints -
was this the water I'd taken onboard? | |

late last night until 3:45 this morning
updating this workbook and drank pint
after pint of water/lime squash
continuously from around midnight
(knowing that going to the loo over the
next 4 hours wouldn't disturb my sleep)
to see if I could put an end to my
constant dark/almost orange pee day
after day. I didn't really think about
the effect this would have on exercising
until I got on the bike this
morning...WHAT A SESSION AND A CONTRAST
TO THE LAST ONE! The best session yet -
wattage (previous PB smashed), related
heart rate and distance (PB for effort
level) are incredible and correct! Legs
really up for it right from the start,
full of effortless power right to the
finish. | |

after yesterday's 105 min run and should
probably have drunk more beforehand but
felt bloated after porridge oats/banana
at 1pm. Took most of session to really
warm up and by 45 mins I was really
enjoying it - sprint power increased to
130W from 120W. | |

session, legs strong and up for it
almost from the start. Sprints became
more and more powerful - even managed
190 for a second or so towards the end.
Slightly disappointed with the figures,
thought the effort I put in was greater
than it actually was. | |

session, legs needed a bit of a warm-up
after yesterday's 75 min run but fine
after 5 mins. Lots of power in all the
sprints. | |

72 | Fri, 18 Jan 2019 | 1:00 | 24.4 | 15.2 | 15.2 | 6 (50%) | 102 | 125 | J | Boston 26.01.1969. 5:45pm. Good session
but could feel my legs tiring a bit in
second half. Tried to keep power up to
128W and generally succeeded. Went all
out on sprints but didn't sense it
feeling quite as powerful as last time -
surprised figure was so close to it, and
HR was so low cos heart was going well
over 115 at times. Painful chafing to R
side of perineum - worn Muddyfox shorts
twice in succession now - MUST NOT DO! | |
