Hello,

Small problem.

I have wide table for punching data. For many columns there is the same two word as headers. (the dates might change so can't use formula in the tableheaders).

Creating the table will then leave me with:
Budget | Actual | Budget1 | Actual1 | Budget2 | and so on.

So I want to simply show the first 7 characters in the cell, don't need to change the actual value.

Does anyone know of a nice trick, prehaps using good old Custom Format to only show a spesific numbers of characters.

I can use some vba code to create a workaround, but I am desperatly trying to avoid vba for the moment.

Best regards,

Excel Facts

Will the fill handle fill 1, 2, 3?
Yes! Type 1 in a cell. Hold down Ctrl while you drag the fill handle.
One workaround..

Assuming first header cell is A1 ...
- insert a row above the table
- enter this formula in A1 and copy to right
=LEFT(A2,7)
- format the cells similar to table header row
- hide table header row

Solution
Indeed a workaround. And for this purpose it is a good one.

I guess I am too much of a pure-ist to come up with that one.

Thanks!
