Custom cell formatting

I want to show numbers greater than 999 as >999 and less than (999) as <(999).
If the cell value is 15 it should be displayed as 15 but for -15 it should be displayed as (15).

Not sure if that is possible or not. Can someone please help?

Author John Walkenbach was Mr Spreadsheet until his retirement in June 2019.
I don't know that is possible, as you seem to have four different conditions, specifically for:
1. Values less than -999
2. Values between -999 and 0
3. Values between 0 and 999
4. Values above 999

And according to the "Conditionals" section in this link here, it seems that Excel can only handle up to 2 conditions:

I am not sure where these numbers are coming from (hard-coded entries or results of formulas) and when they are being added, but you could use VBA to automatically set the format based on the cell value (upon entry), or run VBA code against a list of existing data. If you are interested in that option, please provide those details on the data (and where exactly in the sheet they reside, i.e. range addresses).
