I have a spreadsheet problem involving splitting and combining currency values.

All cells are formatted currency with 2 decimal places.

In cells D3 - D7 are whole dollar values adding up to $5.00 in cell D8.

Cells D9 - D13 are cents values adding up to 79¢ in D14.

I add the two cells together to total
$5.79 in cell D15.

In cell D17 is $5.79 from a different calculation.

When I compare the two, Excel says they're not equal.

If anyone sees what I'm doing wrong, I'd really appreciate you pointing it out to me. I hope my explanation is clear enough. Thanks in advance.

Excel Facts

Add Bullets to Range
Select range. Press Ctrl+1. On Number tab, choose Custom. Type Alt+7 then space then @ sign (using 7 on numeric keypad)
What is the calculation that gets you the $5.79 in the other cell?
I think if you have any division or infinite decimals (like one third of $1) this may happen, espcially if you're calculating things differently.
Change the number format to all the decimals you can for the cells you are looking at.

Numeric precision differences occur in Excel from time to time.
If this amount is an end result, using ROUND is useful. if you're paying fractions of cents then you need to determine how to proceed.

Please take a look at this Wikipedia on Excel's precision:
