Curious why private message inbox limited to one item?

Hi there. I've been reading avidly for years, but only recently became a member. I sent a private message to another user, which filled up my mailbox, and I couldn't receive his reply. So I had to delete my first sent message, send him another message telling him to try again, and then delete the second sent message so I could receive his reply. I just wonder why? I feel like the messaging system has no utility at all if it can accommodate only one message at a time... Thoughts? Help? Thank you.
