Crosstab Query Reports - "Does not recognise * as a val

Hello chaps and chicks.

I'm running a report based upon a crosstab query, and it's running fine. The problem occurs when I try to limit the dataset used by putting an additional column in the query to show only records which meet a certain criteria. I've done it the same way that I do select queries, but I get the message:

 The Microsoft Jet Database engine does not recognise '[Forms]![Department Selection Form]![DepartmentChoices]' as a valid field name or expression.

I've seen a couple of other posts on the board which talk about "frozen columns" and such like, but (a) I'm not sure that'll fix this particular problem and (b) they seem a bit technical, and I'm a complete newbie at Access and don't really 'do' VB yet.

If anyone could explain how to fix this for me as if they were talking to a village idiot, I'd be very much obliged indeed.

Many thanks in advance,
Caring Sharing Bristol Billy Bob.

p.s. if you need anything further to understand my query, please ask.
