Creating connection between NetSuite and Excel VBA

Years ago I did a project that I used VBA for. We were pulling data directly into excel from an ERP.

I am now working on another project where I want the data from our ERP (NetSuite) to be automatically populated in Excel and cannot remember for the life of me the code/process for connecting the two sources.

I don't understand ODBC connections (and am not sure if that's necessary in this case). I did see that the NetSuite one costs money, but I don't recall us spending any money to connect the last time I did a similar project?

Any guidance or advice would be welcome--I'm having trouble turning up clear results in the google searches I'm doing.
