Hi

I’d like to count the names I am entering in column B so I can see at a glance how many times the name appears.

Can’t figure out how to do this.

Thank you for any help.

Excel Facts

Copy formula down without changing references
If you have =SUM(F2:F49) in F50; type Alt+' in F51 to copy =SUM(F2:F49) to F51, leaving the formula in edit mode. Change SUM to COUNT.
Thank you for the reply.

I’ve tried (COUNTIF B^,B^) which works well, however the first name appears 4 times, so every mention of this name shows 4.

Can I get it to show the 1st, 2nd etc... occurrence of the name?

Regards

From your original post, it sounds like you just wanted a total count, but now it actually sounds like you want a running counter. You can use COUNTIF for that too, you just need to set the range correctly.
Instead of locking the ending row range, use the same row that the formula is in, and allow the end row number to "float".

So, enter this formula in on row 2 and copy all the way down for all rows:
Code:
=COUNTIF(B$2:B2,B2)
