COUNTIFS on blocks of text

hello,

I have a large dataset. under the heading Theme there are blocks of text, ie not single words. i have created a simplified version below

sample table;

i want to count, for example the number of times the words 'ownership' OR 'trade' appear for Victoria.

the formula i am using is doubling up on the last 2 entries, its driving me bonkers.

this is what i have;

=SUM(COUNTIFS(A2:A8,{"Victoria"},B2:B8, {"*ownership*";"*trade*"}))

I'm sure its simple and i cant see it!!

where column A is State and column B is Theme....
and the formula will compare the whole cell value...
so in this case the count will return only 1...

Hello, thanks but i want the count to be 5 ie there are 5cells that contain either ownership or trade where the state is Victoria. Thanks Amanda

i am getting #value<o:p></o:p>

when i try and evaluate the expression to work it out it is indicating that there is something wrong wit the value of the E1 and E2 cells.<o:p></o:p>
this si a bit beyond my capabilities....

You need to confirm the formula with control+shift+enter, not just enter, that is, press down the control and shift keys at the same time while you hit the enter key.

oh ok I've never known that! sorry i didnt realise that was part of the instructions in your last post!

ok so it works however i get the answer True insread if a count of the number of times it is true ie 5. i though the last part of the equation is doing the counting? ie if it = D4 then assign the value 1?

Ive tried google for he answer but not glory.

D4 contains the condition that must hold for A2:A8, which is 1. Try to run the formula unchanged after placing a 1 in D4. The last 1 bit in the formula is not expressing that condition. It rather says "give a 1 whenever a record meets all of the conditions that we have" and SUM sums all those 1's.
