Countif, suproduct, etc. Formula needed

Hi All,

I have repeated text values in column A, I want a formula that should give the first set of same text values 1, the second group 2 and so on.
For example; column a first five cell contain Apple so the formula in the corresponding cell will assign number 1,1,1,1,1 and to the second set of the cell will assign 2,2,2 etc.
COUNTIF increases to the number that I do not want.

In B1 enter 1, in B2 enter

=IF(A2="","",IF(A2=A1,B1,B1+1))

copy down range
