Countif Not Calculating Properly

Hello,

I have a data set that is very large (180k rows). I am using a countif function to see which ID#s are showing up twice. I do not want these removed, as I still need them in the data. However, when I use the countif function, it does not show multiple counts for ID#s that I know are duplicates. I am doing =countif(A:A,A1) but have also tried =countif(A1:A180000,A1) for speed. I have tried setting the two ID#s that I believe to be equal to each other to check string lengths and excess spaces, which shows they are the same. When copying the formula, the calculating processors shows up, but after it is done calculating the counts are still not updated. I would appreciate any tips.

Thanks,

Ben

How can you turn a range sideways?
Copy the range. Select a blank cell. Right-click, Paste Special, then choose Transpose.
Hi,

If they are indeed identical (another check could be =A1=B1 as an example, should return TRUE)

All I can think of is are calculations set to manual?

The count ended up calculating correctly, but only 15 minutes later, with there being no indication that the cells were still being calculated. Interesting problem, especially as I meant to hard code the data after calculating to help with the file size.
