COUNTIF Formula referencing other cell as range

I'm looking for the correct syntax for the following formula

Cell A1 is a formula that = A9:S9

=COUNTIF(A1,"X")

:eeek:

Return population for a City
If you have a list of cities in A2:A100, use Data, Geography. Then =A2.Population and copy down.
Using INDIRECT which building or referencing a range elsewhere.
