COUNTIF data messes up during sorting?

I'm using this formula to count how many openings each manager has:

COUNTIF('Open Reqs'!K:K,Sheet1!$A2)

It works great, but when I sort the data by largest to smallest, all of the date messes up. How can I keep the data during a sort?

Excel Facts

Why are there 1,048,576 rows in Excel?
The Excel team increased the size of the grid in 2007. There are 2^20 rows and 2^14 columns for a total of 17 billion cells.
Assuming the formula is on sheet1, use
COUNTIF('Open Reqs'!K:K,A2)

Column K is on one sheet, and A2 is on another. The formula works fine. My problem is sorting afterwards.

What sheet is the formula on?
