Count Unique Values

This seems like it should be easy to do but I'm not getting it.

I have a column

Michigan
Ohio
Wisconsin
Michigan
Utah
Utah
Michigan

I want to count how many times Michigan is in that column

assuming data in column A
=COUNTIF(A1:A100,"Michigan")

Thank you ExcelNewbie2020. I realize now I phrased my question incorrectly.

Going with my original list, How many states are listed.? Duplicates would only be counted as 1. So the answer would be 4.

Is this possible?

=SUM(1/COUNTIF(A1:A7, A1:A7))
