Count of 'starts with' cells

Hi,

I am looking for a formula that will retrieve a count from a range of cells that starts with a given two or three letters.

For example, if I have a range of cells that start with two different letters (AA, AB, AC), I want to have a formula that will count the number of cells that begin with AA.
