Count number of shaded cells depending on value entered in shaded cell

I have two different colours to represent dayshift and nightshift. I allocate these coloured cells by inserting initials (2 x digits) into same shaded cell. I wanted the ability to count number of dayshifts/nightshifts in a range allocated to a particular initial. Can someone please give me some tips.
