Count Entries only once

Hi,

I'm sure this is simple but too much for my little head:

I have a column with many entries in, and some will be duplicates. the formula i have been trying (and failing with) is:

=COUNTIF(B:B,UNIQUE(B:B,TRUE))

looking at the list below. the answer i need is 6. whilst there are 12 entries i wish to know how many people there are, not how many times they appear.

What do {} around a formula in the formula bar mean?
{Formula} means the formula was entered using Ctrl+Shift+Enter signifying an old-style array formula.
How about
Excel Formula:
=rows(unique(b2:b1000))
