"Could not caculate "xxxxxx" because the formula is invalid"

I keep getting this error, and I have no idea why. in the calculated field, I check the formula and it says it checks out OK, but when I got to add it to the table I get that error. I've tried restarting the computer, re adding the powerpivot tables, but nothing works. if it's not a field in the powerpivot window, it won't calculate anything. even if it's just a simple sum.

current formula =calculate(average[AWT],DATESMTD(Calls[date]))

Ideas?
