Hi,

What is the correct, one stop, formula to calculate the % growth between two numbers?

I am trying to calculate YoY % growth, however if in 2022 the amount was zero but in 2023 the amount was 10,000, surely the growth is 100%.

See the attached image and formula I am using but for the month February it is giving a #DIV/0! error. While, I know I could add in iferror and get it to put in 0 or something instead if an error, surely the figure should be 100%? or am I mistaken?

Thank you

Excel Facts

Round to nearest half hour?
Use =MROUND(A2,"0:30") to round to nearest half hour. Use =CEILING(A2,"0:30") to round to next half hour.

Mathematically speaking, no, that is not true.
100% growth would be if you doubled, i.e. went from 25 to 50.

If you start from 0, you cannot really calculate percent growth (mathematically speaking, it would be how many times do you have to multiply 0 to get to 10000, which is impossible).
So you cannot really calculate growth when starting from 0. Only if starting from some non-negative number to another number.

If you want to handle the error, you can do something like this:
Excel Formula:
=IF(E4=0,"Cannot calculate",SUM(D4-E4)/E4)
