Copy Paste creates extra page breaks

I have a spreadsheet in Excel 2010 (Windows 7). The worksheet is set up to print on three pages. Sometimes (not always) when we copy and paste the worksheet to a new blank worksheet we wind up with lots of extra pages breaks; somtimes as many as twenty extra page breaks.

However, not only do the extra page breaks appear on the pasted worksheet, they also show up on the original sheet we copied from. Trying to undo does not work.

We now know enough to make a backup copy before doing the copy paste.

Any ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks
