Convert text to numbers?

Hi,

I have a worksheet where the data has come from an external database...The numbers have come through as text...

e.g. '$123,444

How can I convert these to numbers...I've tried using formatting and that doesn't work.

Try:

=VALUE(A1)

I would remove all symbols as the first step

=VALUE(SUBSTITUTE(SUBSTITUTE(A1,"$",""),",",""))
