convert mm/dd/yyyy to M or to YYYY

Need help in converting data in cell a1 to only the month in b1 or only the year in c1

if A1 is a valid date then in B1 you can use MONTH function to get the month number, e.g.

=MONTH(A1)

...or if you want the month as text try

=TEXT(A1,"mmmm")

for YEAR use

=YEAR(A1)

In B1, =A1 and format as MMM or MMMM

In C1, =A1 and format at YYYY
