Convert Mbps to Kbps

Hello All,

I have an excel spreadsheet with two different units of measurement.
Some numbers are in Mbps (Megabits per second) and some are in Kbps (Kilobits per second).

How do I perform conversions between Mbps and Kbps?

For example:

2.8Mbps

will be converted to:

2800Kbps

Also excel is not recognizing these units as numbers because of the kbps at the end. Therefore I cannot add two numbers together.

For example:
800Kbps
100Kbbs
900Kbps Total

How can I get excel to add these?

Lock one reference in a formula
Need 1 part of a formula to always point to the same range? use $ signs: $V$2:$Z$99 will always point to V2:Z99, even after copying
1) Remember that there are actually 1024Kb/Mb, not 1000. In order to convert, all you need to do is either multiply or divide by 1024, depending on whether you are going from Kbps to Mbps or from Mbps to Kbps.

2) Instead of typing the units in the cell, which turns your number into a text string, try doing using the Cell format to display the units on a numerical value: Format->Cells...->Number->Custom->#"Kbps" or #"Mbps".

Not working

Hello Hatman,

Tried it but get #value! error when I try to sum the numbers.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

I can't imagine why you would get a #Value! error if you did what I suggested. Try doing this: open a NEW workbook. Type some numbers in the cells representing your volumes. Now sum them. You should get a real result. Now select those cells, and go into Format->Cells and input the format #"Mbps" exactly as I have typed it. Each number should be displayed with the proper units.

If all of this has been successful you need to compare with what you have in your original spreadsheet, and make whatever changes are necessary. Let me know how you make out.
