constantly re-linking workbook files

New to '07, but am adjusting fairly well until this:

I've got an issue with keeping links linked. I made 25ish workbooks with links to common files that everyone in the department has access to. When one of these 25 files is opened for the first time of the day for each user, a pop-up appears stating that the links cannot be updated. Here's the funny thing, the path shown in the links toolbar is the correct path for the linked files; but they won't update until the "change source" feature is used. I've unmapped the shared drive, going back to the Uniform Naming Convention trying to get back to basics (a trick that always worked in '03); no luck. I've searched through past posts on Mr.E and have looked through MS's help pages...nothing.

I hope someone has run across this before, because even the IT group is stumped with this one.

Here is some additional information...I have set up the Trust Manager (or whatever it's called) to allow file from our shared drive run macros and establish links. I think it's called a trusted source. So there's no little warning that pops up. Plus it's crept into all my other excel files. I'm sure it's a simple setting, but for the life of me I can't find it.

HELP!!!!

Re-linking every file is getting very tedious.

Have I really stumped everyone at Mr. Excel?

The files will now update if I ask the external links to update the data; however, they will still not work for other users. I changed the folder properties so that everyone in my user group has full access to the folder these files are saved in, which is what fixed it for me, but not everyone else.

I am wondering if the file type must be the same (.xlsx to .xlsx) and will not work if mismatched (.xlsx to .xls). I wouldn't have thought that would make a difference, but we're talking about MS Excel so anything is possible.

To restate, I have twenty-five separate files linked to two common files. All of these files my user group has access to. The link displayed in the external links window is correct so everyone can find the files to change the source, which has stuck exactly twice (yes I have two files that anyone can open and update).

Do I need to input more details? I have been pouring through old Mr. E. posts trying to find anything that is even remotely similar to my problem...but it seems that any time someone posts this problem they have not been answered. Have I really stumped everyone at Mr. Excel? Or, is it a case of the answer being so obvious I'm going to wind up sounding really stupid with the ongoing line of questions?

I'm not an Excel novice, I'm pretty good with '03 and am learning '07. But, the fix I know for '03 (using the UNC file path rather than the mapped drive letter shortcut) doesn't work.

Could that be a file sharing issue like in win xp you have to reshare file unless the in the shared document forder and You still have to re share?
