i am trying to compare two rows of numbers and use conditional formatting with either a tick or a cross if the two values are the same or not.

for instance in cell a1 the heading would be predicted
cell b1 the heading would be actual

cell a2 would have 2 cell b2 would have 5, answer cross
cell a3 would have 8 cell b3 would have 8, answer tick
i would also like the icon to appear in cells b2 and b3.

Any ideas?

this relate to thousands of rows

Control Word Wrap
Press Alt+Enter to move to a new row in a cell. Lets you control where the words wrap.
Conditional formatting may be overkill as you can easily just use IF statements. Either way all you need to do is use the wingdings font set as they have ticks and crosses as characters.

So simply putting =IF(A2=B2,CHAR(252),CHAR(251)) in the cell and formatting as the wingdings font should give you what you need, use 253 and 254 if you want them in boxes and up the size if they're too small.

Trouble with the icon sets is you can't use relative references so unless the data in those cells is being generated from other cells to start with your options are limited. If you really can't live without them you'll just have to stick the formula A3=B3 in a separate column hide it and reference that within your conditional formatting
