Conditional Formatting and Counting Coloured cells

Hi Everyone, im new to this so please bare with me.

i have a spreadsheet in excel 2007. It shows a students target grade in one column and their recent test mark in another column. Firstly i have applied conditional formatting to say whether or not the student has hit their target, below or above, using red, yellow and green colours. This all works fine.

Now i would like to add a formula that counts the number of cells that are red, yellow or green etc.......

Can anyone help.

A dummies guide would be fantastic!!!!!

It is easier to count the cells that meet the condition that triggers the Conditional Format.

i have looked on that web page about twenty times today and to be honest i have tried it a million different ways and it still wont work. I think i need more of a dummies guide.

What numerical value is used in the CF formula?

i have used a look up table with numbers and just the greater than, less than and = too

is there anyway to send you a copy??

If you use one of the HTML makers here http://www.mrexcel.com/forum/showthread.php?t=508133 it will display your CF formulas.

The point is you will need to count values not colours, e.g.

=COUNTIF(A1:A10,">3")
