Hello, I have been trying to run this problem through ChatGPT, but it cannot get the solution correctly. I am trying to create a template to automatically assign and/or reassign a number based on a couple of criteria. I am not sure if this is the right place to go, but I have watched so many Mr. Excel videos, he is the 1st person I thought of that could potentially help, along with all the other brilliant minds that contribute here. So here is goes: I will upload my worksheet, but want to provide some context to the issue. I machine embroider and I have to manually type data into a spreadsheet so I can assign a needle position to the thread color that needs to be used for the design. I am trying to minimize the number of times I have to change the thread so efficient assignment is the goal. Below is a sample of the spreadsheet I use and some comments of how I manually assign the needle positions. I appreciate any help that can be provided. Thank you.

Hi *vlmiller845. I'm guessing you're still looking for help on this. What do you consider a successful outcome.... the least number of needles to produce the outcome; OR the least number of needles changed; OR the least number of needles changes (ie. total needle changes); OR some combination of these; OR all of these; OR something else? I don't quite understand your displayed outcomes above. For example, color change #13 has Baby's Breathe replacement with needle #6 which I understand, but color change #14 has Tusk replacement with #7? Why not use #6 again as there is no more requirements for Baby's Breathe? Dave

Hello, thank you for responding to my question. You are correct with the color change #13; however I try to avoid thread changes with the same needle position right next to each other. I have provided a photo of the embroidery machine with 10 needles, some machines can have more or less needles so that could change, but for this example I am using my 10 needle machine. I have also included the original copy of the pattern that uses 26 different thread colors and 57 different thread changes. Since the machine only has 10 needles I have to change the thread colors based on the order of the 57 thread changes in the pattern. I try to minimize the number of times I have to rethread the machine to change the thread colors based on the pattern. The machine runs around 1000 stitches per minute so stopping the machine at the exact time needed to change the thread, if the thread color color change is the next needle with the same color is very difficult. I try to allow myself at least one needle ahead to change colors so I thread the machine while it is still running and then I can stop the machine, pull the threads through and restart the machine, but if I change the thread for the next needle as suggested, it can be done, but not ideal. I hope this makes sense and I appreciate any help. Thank you

OK. Sounds dangerous. So I'll rework my solution for safety's sake. As a nearly retired farmer with all my digits and appendages, I would very much encourage you to make sure any machine that you use is stopped before making any kind of change to it. I'll post when I arrive at another solution. Dave
