Compatibility Mode Issues

I am receiving very large excel .xls files produced by Crystal Reports. These files all contain more than 150,000 lines. I have to open the .xls file in compatibility mode I know, but then, after I run Convert, the resulting file still only has 65000 lines. I close and reopen the file as an .xlsx but I am still limited to 65000 lines. I know there are many more line as the page headings in the report indicate I am only seeing page 1750/2500. Does anybody know how to recover the last half of these files?
