I have a very large workbook (over 16meg)

It takes approx. 2 minutes to open. PC has 512ram, 2 gig processor.

There are many cell references and calculations happening within the workbook.

Does Excel have some kind of compacting feature to possibly reduce the load and save times of such a big file?

Thanks
Neil

Does the VLOOKUP table have to be sorted?
No! when you are using an exact match, the VLOOKUP table can be in any order. Best-selling items at the top is actually the best.

Hi,

Excel has no in-built compact feature. Firstly, do you have any macros in your workbook. If so, it's probably worth taking a trip to www.appspro.com and using the VBA Code Cleaner application from there.

Also, try exporting all of your worksheets to a new workbook. This may screw up your formulas but if you can do it without harming them then you may claim back some space. Also, try to minimise the amount of formatting within your workbook, number of named ranges and limit your wokrbook to either 'pure presentation' or 'pure data'.

I had a 10mb spreadsheet that opened in about 1 minute - and I recently found out that it was taking so long because I had a passwordr to open option set.

I took this off, and now it loads in 8 seconds!!
Quite a difference.

Try it if you have a password on the file - maybe password to readonly.
