Column Filter / categories?

Hi I have the spreadsheet as below and I was wondering how I can filter by column... or would the best way is to create a column (ie named " Category) to reflect which column was filled in then filter it? (If the 2nd option is better, is there a way to use a formula so it automatically does it, or will I need to manually enter it each time?)

Please note, I already have filters for each of the heading. I don't know what to do if I just want to see "Gas" for example.

CATEGORY?	Date	Gas	Electric	Water
	01/02/16	10
	03/02/16		12
	04/02/16			20
	02/03/16		13
	04/03/16			40
	05/03/16	15

If you rearrange your data like this, you can filter in the usual way:

	A​	B​	C​
1​	Date​	Item​	Amount​
2​	1/2/2016​	Gas	10​
3​	3/2/2016​	Electric	12​
4​	4/2/2016​	Water	20​
5​	2/3/2016​	Electric	13​
6​	4/3/2016​	Water	40​
7​	5/3/2016​	Gas	15​
