As per thread title - I was looking to edit a column chart so that [only] a couple of the columns were very close together. Any help gratefully appreciated.

Waterfall charts in Excel?
Office 365 customers have access to Waterfall charts since late 2016. They were added to Excel 2019.
There's no built-in option for that. I think you'd probably have to plot dummy columns of 0 value to pad the gaps where you need them larger, which could get fiddly.
