Hi Peoples; -

Col X is string of (formulated) text entries which may contain "r" or "g" (or non-relevant others).

Col Y is string of values and (formulated)text

Requirement is to highlight Y cells in one colour if
=AND(Xnn="r",Ynn=1) in (say) red
& if
=AND(Xnn="g",Ynn=1) in (say) green

... it does not seem to matter where I put $ signs -
the Conditional formula does not appear to function correctly???

Your suggestions or guidance, please.

Excel Facts

Bring active cell back into view
Start at A1 and select to A9999 while writing a formula, you can't see A1 anymore. Press Ctrl+Backspace to bring active cell into view.
If you are only highlighting column Y, I would put the $ like this:

=AND($Xnn="r",$Ynn=1)

And come to think of it, if you are only selecting a single column, then you shouldn't need to use $ at all. Have you tried it without $?

Can you explain exactly how it is not working correctly?
Does it appear to be highlighting the wrong rows?

One common problem I see is people having issues when trying to apply the Conditional Formatting to multiple rows at once.
The key is to do the following:
- Select the range you want to apply it to
- Write the formula as it applies to the very FIRST cell in your range selection (if you choose whole columns, your row references MUST start at 1, or your highlighting will be off/shifted a few rows).

Thank you Dreid for your rapid response - as you imply - selecting the single "required result" col for the format should not require use of the $ sign...

and yes - the formula now works - quite where I had an apparent error in formatting is beyond me; but I assure you that I was achieving some exceedingly fallicious results for reasons known only to Excel... otherwise I would not have required to post.

PS to Dreid - any chance you might answer my post on "uncluster" columnar graphics, please???

Cheers, Bebbspoke

I am glad you got it working. I took a quick peek at your "uncluster" thread and I am not sure I am the person to help there. I don't dabble in charts, graphs, etc. except for my personal use and that is very seldom.
