color scale conditional format

I want to 3-color scale conditional format with cells that contain formulas (Left & Vlookup) this formula brings back a number between 1 and 5 - the cell format is also in number.
It does not work, the cell's stay blank instead of colored as should be depending on the values?

Shade all formula cells
To shade all formula cells: Home, Find & Select, Formulas to select all formulas. Then apply a light fill color.
left function results in a string... number format is only a visual thing, it does not change the data type... use the value function to convert values to numbers

=VALUE("1") will result in 1
