Hi All,

I have a excel problem.

I have two colums (a and b) with values, and 3 colums (c, d, e) that I need to automatically compare rows 1 and 2 of colum A and B (and onward) and enter a y in colum C, D or E based on if the values are the same (AA and AM) or AM only or AM only.

Can someone help?

(Assuming these columns are A, B, C, D E) I would put this formula in the "AA Only" and "AM Only" columns:
=IF(A1=B1,"","y")
And I would put this in the "AA and AM" column:
=IF(A1=B1,"y","")

Also assuming your data is always a number.

OK. I messed it up. I need to find if any value in colum A matches any value in colum B. Basically which values match and which values are AA only or AM only.

I'm kind of a newbie, so I'm not exactly sure which function would work best, but this seems to work OK
in the AA Only column:
=IF(ISERROR(MATCH(A1,B$1:B$5,)),"y","")
in the AM only column
=IF(ISERROR(MATCH(B1,A$1:A$5,)),"y","")
in the both column
=IF(ISERROR(MATCH(A1,B$1:B$5,)),"","y")

Notice the "$" - that will make sure that the entire range is searched when you copy the formula down your column.

Does anyone know how to get this to work if I am using this formula with text rather than numbers? Works great for numbers, but not text. I have three letter combinations AAA, ZZZ, etc. I have tried the exact syntax, but no luck. Any ideas?
