Change format custom|mm-jj in date

I'm trying to use the datedif function but I need to format values in format custom|mm-jjjj in normal date format. Excel won't let me do it using select format. Any ideas?

If you have =SUM(F2:F49) in F50; type Alt+' in F51 to copy =SUM(F2:F49) to F51, leaving the formula in edit mode. Change SUM to COUNT.

Never mind: "1-" & (cell where mm-jj is) gives a value 1-3-2002 for example, that's the one I can use.
