change default formatting of selected cell(s)

I don't like the look of the default action when selecting a cell or cells which is to draw a heavy border around it/them. Can this default behavior be changed for the entire application? (as opposed to a single workbook)
For example, I would like cell borders to NOT be modified from their non-selected state and cell background colors instead used to show selection and active.
