I have a problem where several users since they upgraded from Windows Vista with Excel 2007 to Windows 7 with Excel 2007 now get 2 temporary (.TMP) files generated each time after modifying an Excel document (.xlsx) and they DON'T GO AWAY!
As an example. You have test.xlsx saved on 10-29-11 at 8am, size 161KB. You open it today and make a modification and save it at 10:35am. You now have the following.
Test.xlsx -- 10-31-11 10:35am 161KB
abcde123.tmp -- 10-29-11 08:00am 161KB
sa123dkjf.tmp -- 10-31-11 10:35am 161KB
We have about 30 users who do this to about 18 .xlsx files and over a month generate over 1000 .TMP files from each time they save.
It seems like extra version backups of the same file. The users cannot delete the .TMP files off the organizational network drive, but administrators can. This is creating a space issue if every file is taking 3x amount of space on the drive and that is just with these.
I've looked at Excel Options and have not seen anything that specifies save different versions besides autorecover (saved on roaming profile directory on their own computer) and save a backup (which is not selected).
PLEASE Advise. The only thing that it could possibly be is the permissions. I've looked at the permissions and it is not the permissions as the users have read & write, but they can still modify the document. Would leaving out the checkmark for "modify" in the privileges cause these multiple .TMPs to be created and stay after the user has closed the excel file?
