Can't open xlsx file after saving locally

So when someone sends me an excel document I can open it as an attachment. But if I right-click the document to save it locally and then browse to it I get an error that says "excel cannot open the file "Filename" because the file format or extension is not valid. Verify that the file has not been corrupted and that the file extension matches the format of the file.

However, if I open the file in the email and do a "save-as" I can then later open the file.
