Can I Make Excel Always Use UNC?

Scenario: Multiple users with different network drive mappings using the same file. Said file needs to be linked to another file on the network to pull data with a VLOOKUP function.

Problem: Excel changes the link from Universal Naming Convention (UNC) to a drive path when other users open it. I've tried to edit the links by browsing through My Network Places and this works until another user opens the file and then it changes the link again. I've read through the article "Description of link management and storage in Excel" but I'm still stuck. I have macros in the same file that use UNC without a problem.

Question: Can I somehow keep the UNC path in the formula despite various users opening the file?

Thanks.
