Can Excel even calculate this equation?

Hello -

I'm trying to use Excel to calculate the below equation and I'm not sure where to start (or if this is even possible). Can someone please advise? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Expressed as a single equation:

eGFRcr = 142 x min(Scr/κ, 1)α x max(Scr/κ, 1)-1.200 x 0.9938Age x 1.012 [if female]

where:

Scr = standardized serum creatinine in mg/dL
κ = 0.7 (females) or 0.9 (males)
α = -0.241 (female) or -0.302 (male)
min(Scr/κ, 1) is the minimum of Scr/κ or 1.0
max(Scr/κ, 1) is the maximum of Scr/κ or 1.0
Age (years)

Excel Facts

Fastest way to copy a worksheet?
Hold down the Ctrl key while dragging tab for Sheet1 to the right. Excel will make a copy of the worksheet.
Excel can certainly calculate equations when the equation is actually complete, but this one is missing a few things. Critically, what is Scr supposed to be? There is no number provided.

Also, are you sure you copied and pasted this properly? I, for one, don't know what one is meant to do with 0.9938Age.

If you can demonstrate how you would solve this manually, then I'm someone (if not me) will be able to help with Excel formula.

The α was confusing me, might be better to break it down into steps.

It's a relief to see it wasn't just me then that was confused. I suspect the α will need to be -0.241 (female) (noting the 'if female' reference), but I don't quite know how it is meant to relate to the rest of the equation...o_O

Hello -

Apologies for not providing additional information.

For the purposes of this equation, 0.9938^AGE, AGE would be equal to 30.

For the Scr value, this would be equal to 1.1.

I'm not at my computer, but is that the same approach for alpha?

Also, serum creatine? You're not going to be administering anything on the basis of this equation?

Of course not. I'm just using this to compare data from a different source/calculation.

Phew... because my high school maths teacher would have a heart attack if he ever found out! 😅

When doing complicated equations like this, it is useful to break it down into steps. Do a column for each of the parts of the equation, for example α:

Excel Formula:
=IF([gender cell]="female",-0.241,-0.302)

Then you can add/multiply the columns together in the end.

When doing complicated equations like this, it is useful to break it down into steps. Do a column for each of the parts of the equation, for example α:

Excel Formula:
=IF([gender cell]="female",-0.241,-0.302)

Then you can add/multiply the columns together in the end.
So would there be a single row for the equation that's essentially pulling data for the predefined values in each of the columns?

Female: (k)
0.7
Male: (k)
0.9
Female: (α)
-0.241
Male: (α)
-0.302
Scr
1.11
Age0.9938^30

And then the IF statement would just reference each of these cells? Thanks for your help!
