Calculate average from variable ranges

I want a formula automatically to find the last 2 months of variable ranges and average the costs: I want to average Dec and Jan only; next month I want to average Jan and Feb so-on

Given a date, ie today

=MONTH(EDATE(TODAY(),-2))
will provide the month number two months ago

=MONTH(EDATE(TODAY(),-1))
will provide the month number one month ago
