Excel Facts

Excel Can Read to You
Customize Quick Access Toolbar. From All Commands, add Speak Cells or Speak Cells on Enter to QAT. Select cells. Press Speak Cells.
Strange, I don't get that behavior.
If I do not change anything and try to close it, it does not prompt me asking me if I want to save the file. It just closes it.
Are you sure that the code does not have any VBA running in the background that code be making updates?
Does it contain any VBA code at all?

Along with what Joe4 has said,
Are you opening the file in compatibility mode, or do you have formulas referencing other workbooks?

Compatability mode is when you open an xls file in xl2007 or newer.

It sounds to me like you have volatile formulas in the workbook, or you’re opening a workbook that was previously calculated in an earlier version of Excel.

As Rory replies suggests, if that is the issue, that it was created in an earlier version of Excel, try saving it in the recent version with the proper extension (probably "xlsx").

You don’t actually have to change the format, just save it in the newer version of Excel.
