Paul writes in with today's question. Is it possible to keep Excel 2003 and also install Excel 2007 on the same computer? In Episode 1081, I discuss this issue and show a cool way to export a chart as a graphic.

Hey, welcome back to the MrExcel netcast.
I'm Bill Jelen.
Basically, we start out with massive amounts of data.
So, how we're going to analyze it.
Well, let's fire up a pivot table and see if you can solve this problem.
Hey, welcome back to the MrExcel netcast.
I'm Bill Jelen.
Today, we get a question sent in by Paul.
Paul says, he's finally ready to upgrade to excel 2007.
Wonders if he has to uninstall excel 2003, before he can update to excel 2007, Well, the official answer is, that it's okay to have Excel, Word and PowerPoint, both 2003 and 2007, on the same machine.
Ofcourse, you want to make sure that 2003 is there first, and install 2007, over top of it.
Outlook though, you have to choose one or the other.
You either don't install Outlook 2007, or if you do install Outlook 2007, Outlook 2003 will be removed.
Now, in my experience that one thing that is not going to work anymore after you install, and admittedly this is very very obscure.
There is a cool trick, let's say we create a chart here.
I'll just create a cool looking 3D pie chart, and I want to create a graphic from this pie.
There's some VBA code that you can run.
I will switch back here to Visual Basic.
And it says ActiveChart.Export Give it a file name and a file filter. It could be either a gif or jpeg. Will run this real quick here.
And you'll see that it takes that chart and creates a nice little, "View" "Refresh" creates a nice little graphic file from that chart.
Okay so, this is a bit of code and every once in a while, we have some programs that use this.
Well, the big problem, that I've seen with both 2003 and 2007, is that the 2003 version of Excel will no longer export this chart.
Something happen when we install 2007. I let Microsoft know about it.
They said, yeah it's a bug, it seems too obscure for us to fix.
So, it's out there. It still works in 2007.
But, when you go back and try to run this code in 2003, not going to work.
That's really the only thing, that I've run into, there may be other problems.
I mean this is admittedly very obscure, but we had code that was doing this, and we noticed, it stopped working in 2003.
There might be some other things, but for the most part, you know, in several years of doing seminars in both 2003 and 2007, switching back and forth, that's really the only thing, that I've seen it's been broken.
So, Paul, certainly go ahead if you have 2003, go ahead and upgrade to 2007.
It work for Excel, Word, PowerPoint.
Again, Outlook is the only thing that you won't be able to upgrade.
You have to choose one or the other.
Well, there you have it.
Paul, thanks for sending that note in, and thanks to you for stopping by.
Will see you next time for another netcast from MrExcel.
