Barcode scanning database

Hi there!
I need a lot of help:
I need to be able to scan a brcode into a single cell (one that is frozen at the top of the spreadsheet), have excel find that serial number in a list of serial numbers, enter a check mark into the adjcent cell and a date and time stamp adjcent to that.

Please if anyone can help me, i'm very new to excel so I still don't know many of the functions or how they work (but I do have a basic understanding of some) (I am running Excel 2007)
and please any help at all would be amazing!


this is a example of what I was hoping the table would look like (with a row above to scan the barcodes in):

search for barcode on here, there are more than a few examples, read them and see what limits / can be achieved, then pick what you want and explain where you need the help. ode won't help until you have a workable solution to grab the scanned values
