What am I doing wrong?

The syntax is ">="&M2 not ">=M2"

=AVERAGEIFS(E:E;D:D;">"&M2;D:D;"<="&M3) still returns the same error

If correct, wrap it into an IFERROR call:

=AVERAGEIFS(E:E;D:D;">"&M2;D:D;"<="&M3)

If you believe it's incorrect, check this:

=COUNTIFS(D:D;">"&M2;D:D;"<="&M3)

The COUNTIFS returns a 0, even though there are values that fit the criteria. The date cells are all formatted as date, and the 41,50/42,00 column is formatted as a number. Any ideas?

You could convert the dates in column D into true dates.
