average of duplicates solution needed - macro or otherwise

Hi,

I have a fairly easy problem, which is similar to this one: http://www.mrexcel.com/forum/showthread.php?t=70670&highlight=sum+duplicates

In this case my data is like so:

I need to to end up with the mean of prcp_amt values of duplicates in Column A... if that makes any sense?!

End result would therefore look like this:

This would save me a fair bit of time as the sheet has 85,000+ rows...

If a macro is used (not necessary - whatever's easy) then it would be great to know what parts of the code are doing what. That's only my interest, obviously help in any form would be greatly appreciated!

Assuming the date codes are col A and measurements in colB. As an array formula =AVERAGE(IF($A$2:$A$8=A2,$B$2:$B$8)) Enter with holding Ctrl+Shift+Enter, not just enter, and excel will show it as {=AVERAGE(IF($A$2:$A$8=A2,$B$2:$B$8))}
You probably need to filter a list of uinique dates to another place and modify the ranges in the solution to match

Thanks Konew, that's done the trick. Really appreciate it - never used an array formula before!

I have one slight problem still. Column A and C now both have dates, A with the duplicates and C with a reference list of the range of dates in my data set.

Some of the array results come up with the DIV/0! error. Most of the array formula works, returning the correct average of each dates data.

The error must be caused by the date in column A =/= C, as when I use a simple =IF(A2=A2,1,0) I get the result '0'. The same formula returns '1' for 'working' cells.

I have tried formatting the cells to date format, there is no difference in appearance to look at. Any other suggestions?

From the testing you have done, and testing I did, I think you have dates in column C that dont exist in A. I can't imagine how that came about if you just did a filter on A to get unique dates. With 85000 rows I guess you got the data from a dump from another system. There could be hidden unprintable characters attached to some dates in col A, that are not in C.
How did you create the list in C?
Someone else will have to take over. It's late Friday here and I have work to finish to qualify for a weekend at the beach.

This issue is now resolved.

I think this issue was due to the original dates appearing as 1/3/1969 instead of 01/03/1968. Changing the cells to "date" format did not help but doing a find "/1/" replace "/01/" on Column A for each month did the trick - it then also automatically reformatted days with only one digit to 01, 02 etc.

Thanks again for your help, using Excel is so satisfying when you can manage it and infuriating when you can't!
