Hello,

I have a Work Order Table that has Part Number and Description. I also have a Part Number Table that has the part number and description of that part number.

How can the Work Order Table autofill the description field when entering in the part number field?

Thanks,
XJ

Excel Facts

Which came first: VisiCalc or Lotus 1-2-3?
Dan Bricklin and Bob Frankston debuted VisiCalc in 1979 as a Visible Calculator. Lotus 1-2-3 debuted in the early 1980's, from Mitch Kapor.
As a general rule, the work order table should not have the description in it. Only the part number. When you use the table data in forms, reports, and queries, you join the two tables as needed to show descriptions when they are needed.

To answer the question directly, however, you can write an update query to update part numbers but this would be a bad practice - the whole point of having the description in the part number table is so that if you decide to change the description you won't need to re-update all the other tables that might have the old descriptions in them. This is basically having "one truth" about the part - by keeping the information about the part in the part number table, and using the number as a key to relate it to other tables that use parts.
